Minister of Justice Fikrat Mammadov met with the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović, who is on a visit to Azerbaijan on July 11.
Speaking about the fruitful cooperation between Azerbaijan and the Council of Europe, the minister informed about the judicial-legal reforms serving provision of human rights, the modernization of judicial infrastructure, the application of electron court and the activities of the regional courts under the leadership of the President Ilham Aliyev, noted that the reforms in this field were continued at a new stage by the Decree of the head of state on April 3, 2019.
Expressing her satisfaction with her visit to Azerbaijan for the first time as a European Commissioner for Human Rights, the guest said that the purpose of the visit was to support human rights, including the rights of internally displaced persons, and welcomed the reforms and innovations in the judicial-legal system.
Expressing her gratitude for the opportunity to visit penitentiary institutions during the visit, Mrs. Mijatović evaluated the Azerbaijani side’s "open door" policy as a good manifestation of mutual cooperation and confidence and touched upon the decriminalization of criminal legislation.
According to the Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan dated February 10, 2017 on the humanization of the penal policy of the Commissioner, fundamental amendments were made to the Criminal Code and several acts were decriminalized and humanization measures were continued today.
The sides also exchanged views on improvement of legislation, implementation of European Court decisions, development of legal institutes in the regions, improvement of the quality of legal aid rendered to citizens, training of the lawyers at the Academy of Justice and other issues and the interested questions were clarified.
Head of the Council of Europe Office in Baku Zoltan Hernyes and Permanent Representative of Azerbaijan to the Council of Europe Fakhraddin Ismayilov attended the event.
